Is it possible to add quick launch to Windows NT4
workstation? It is running IE6. I have tried right
clicking on the toolbar but it doesn't seem to be there to
activate. thanks.

Yes, I have a few IE4.01 CD's, that were originally supplied with a NT4
Workstation media set.
Installing this IE4.01 on a fresh NT4 installation gives you the option to
Install the Desktop Update (aka Active Desktop).
Then afterward you can upgrade NT to what ever SP or IE version, and you
will keep your Active Desktop.
I guess you can even make a fresh NT install with SP6a (which I think leaves
IE to the default NT4 version), and apply IE4.01 with the Desktop Update
followed by your final IE version.

Ouch, ok I searched Technet and finally found the article describing the
issue, exactly as I thought it is:

I've been through this one. The Active Desktop/Plus!/Quick Launch options
were part of IE 4.0. If you have WINNT 4.0 w/SP6a installed, the only way
to restore the quick launch functions to IE and the Desktop Explorer is to
roll back all security updates, service packs (6, 5, 4 and probably 3) and
uninstall IE 6, IE 5.5 and reinstall IE 4.0 that probably came with either
NT 3.5 or the upgrade to NT 4.0 on the original install disk.
Hi

This is an unofficially way of installing "Active Desktop" on computers with
IE5/6 without reinstalling everything:

IE5: From the folder that contains ie5setup.exe.

Win9x: ie5setup.exe /c:"ie5wzd /e:IE4Shell_WIN /I:Y"
WinNT: ie5setup.exe /c:"ie5wzd /e:IE4Shell_NTx86 /I:Y"

IE6: From the folder that contains ie6setup.exe.

Win98: ie6setup.exe /c:"ie6wzd /e:IE4Shell_WIN /I:Y"
WinNT: ie6setup.exe /c:"ie6wzd /e:IE4Shell_NTx86 /I:Y"

Hi

Open a command prompt (cmd.exe)
Change the current directory to the directory where ie6setup.exe is placed.

Then type this command exactly and press enter:

ie6setup.exe /c:"ie6wzd /e:IE4Shell_NTx86 /I:Y"

Thanks for the info. Guess I won't bother! It's amazing
how much I miss it.

disk. I recently
did a full recovery of NT from a total reformat and
reinstall of NT 3.5 on
up to the latest service pack and security updates. I
found that the Active
Desktop/Plus!/Quick Launch features had not been
reinstalled and did some
research on MS support. You can find the features in IE
4.0 Plus!, but to
the best of my knowledge, once you have brought
everything up to SP6a/IE6.0,
unless you rollback to IE4.0 and do a reinstall,
including the Plus!
features, you can forget trying to restore Active
Desktop/Plus!/Quick Launch
on IE5.5/WINNT 4.0 and beyond. It didn't seem worth the
effort to do all
the uninstalls/reinstalls and rollbacks just to obtain
those features again.
